Dan's mom used to spend her entire holiday season in the kitchen. She baked every kind of cookie known to mankind. She made candies and brittles. She gave them as gifts and was constantly treating guests to her homemade goodies. The first year we were married, Dan thought that it was necessary to continue this tradition in our home. We spent WAY too much money on supplies for baking and decorating cookies. We spent our evenings baking for a week. Then we decided that it was "for the birds." We don't need to be eating this junk. It's messy, somewhat expensive, and exhausting. From then on, we left the holiday treat-making to Linda. Ha!
Dan does participate in a holiday cookie exchange at work each year. Everyone brings 5 dozen homemade cookies or confections. They exchange their goodies, and he comes home with an unbelievable assortment of treats. Monday evening Dan decided to try his hand at making a homemade Thin Mint. Basically, you melt chocolate, add some peppermint oil, and dip Ritz crackers in the mint chocolate. Gabriel was SO excited to help his daddy.
Unfortunately, we didn't have the exact ingredients, so Dan thought he would adapt the recipe a little. Instead of using chocolate chips for melting, he used unsweetened chocolate mixed with some light corn syrup.
These two were on a roll making their Thin Mints, but I was skeptical of this adapted recipe. I tasted the adapted chocolate, and it was N-A-S-T-Y. Oh my! I had to get something to drink to get the taste out of my mouth! Moral to the story: If you don't have the right ingredients, just leave well enough alone. Ha! It's alright; we had a good laugh.
